Abstract: Plant hormones of the auxin type play a crucial role in the regulation of spatial and temporal aspects of plant growth and development. As well as being required for the division, enlargement and differentiation of individual plant cells, auxins also function as signals between cells, tissues and organs. In this way they contribute to the coordination and integration of growth and development in the whole plant and to physiological responses of plants to environmental cues. Auxins are the only plant hormones which can be transported to longer distances in a polar way. Vectorial part of auxin transport is a key element for control of spatial relationships during development. Polar auxin transport is a very complex and dynamic process which is regulated at differential levels. This chapter summarises present physiological, biochemical and genetic information about the mechanism of polar auxin transport, about its regulation and its significance for particular physiological processes.
